Which tools tell you whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews cite you — and how to choose without overbuying. Disclosure up front: we build one of them.
We build one of these, so read this as a practitioner's map, not a neutral review — every capability claim below is checkable on the vendor's own site.

One measured observation from our own August 2026 Ahrefs pull: in our category, AI citation and search traffic barely correlate — one competitor with a third of another's traffic was cited by every engine we track, while the higher-traffic one was cited almost nowhere. Whatever tool you pick, measure citation separately from rankings; one is not a proxy for the other.
A growing share of searches ends in an AI-written answer instead of a click. The answer names a handful of sources — everyone else is invisible, at any rank. AI visibility tools exist to answer two questions rankings cannot: are we in the answer, and who is there instead of us.
Software that checks whether AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot — mention or cite your site when they answer questions in your niche, and tracks how that presence changes over time.
Rank trackers measure the list of links; AI visibility tools measure the answer above it. The two disagree often — a site can rank page one and never be cited, or be cited while ranking on page three. If AI answers exist for your queries, you are invisible to that traffic without measuring it.
Two complementary ways: probing engines with real questions and recording who gets cited (per-query, precise, costs per check), and corpus-level indexes that estimate how often a domain appears across many AI answers (broad, but a model). Serious tools combine both and label which is which.
